Entrevista con Mike Suppa, músico que ha tocado con Jerry Cantrell, Steve Morse, Steven Adler y Ace Frehley, entre otros. Actualmente forma parte de la banda Mike Starr`s Motorcade, que como muchos fans de Alice In Chains sabemos, es la vuelta del primer bajista de la banda de Seattle.
En esta oportunidad, en exclusiva para Heavy Shit, Mike nos cuenta sobre su primer disco solista con músicos de lujo y su experiencia tocando con Ace y en la banda tributo más importante de Alice in Chains en USA: Facelift.
Sergio: ¿Puedes contarnos cómo conociste a Mike Starr?
Mike: Lo conocí a través de un guitarrista llamado Al Romano, quien vio algunos archivos de youtube de una tocata y me contactó con Mike. Al día siguiente, Starr me telefoneó y acordamos, voló a Nueva York, tocamos un par de tracks, lo cual terminó definitivamente su estado de retiro de la música. Fue ahí que empezamos el proyecto “Suppasstarr” que derivó luego a Mike Starr's Motorcade.
Sergio: Has tocado con Ace Frehley y Jerry Cantrell, ambos guitarristas con un sonido y vibrato característico, puedes darnos algunos tips para emular a estos dos grandes?
Mike: El único consejo es práctica, práctica, práctica. Todo es “feeling”, y para tenerlo, necesitas ensayar.
Sergio: Cuando tocas con Facelift (banda tributo a Alice In Chains), qué equipamiento usas para los tracks heavy vs los acústicos?
Mike: Mi gear es universal. En vivo y en estudio uso dos cajas Marshall (4x12 cada una), dos amplificador Peavy 5150 & 5150-II, un Cry Baby, Heil Talkbox,MXR phase 90 y un boss TU-2 floor tuner. De vez en cuando uso un Rotovibe.
Sergio: Siendo alguien que ha visto y compartido escenario con Jerry Cantrell, puedes decirnos cómo hace esos overbends? Cómo los emulas?
Mike: Jerry es un guitarrista único. Hay sólo un Jerry Cantrell, por lo que no puedo hablar por su parte, pero luego de estudiar su técnica y tocar, es una cuestión de práctica. Tiene un estilo distintivo para tocar la guitarra. Jerry tiene mucho talento y onda.
Sergio: Cuál es tu canción favorita de Alice y la más difícil de tocar en vivo, por qué?
Mike: Mi canción favorita de Alice In Chains vendría a ser THEM BONES. Muy demandante, cantarla y tocarla a la vez es todo un reto. Además el solo tiene mucha onda.
Sergio: Me dijiste en una conversación previa, que eres amigo del gran Rowan Robertson, alguna chance de juntarlos con Jerry y hacer una gira tipo G3?
Mike: Rowan Robertson es amigo, vive en California, yo en NY. Hemos jammeado en Los Ángeles juntos para su fiesta de cumpleaños. Es un guitarrista sorprendente, que actualmente se encuentra grabando con un nuevo proyecto llamado DC4, que también incluye a Jeff Duncan, guitarrista de Armored Saint, también amigo, con quién he jammeado. Todos músicos impresionantes, todos tenemos nuestros proyectos que nos consumen el tiempo, pero quizás se dé en algún momento.
Sergio: La última vez hablamos sobre la importancia de tocar guitarra dentro del contexto de una canción y no tocar más de lo que corresponde, cómo te mantienes balanceado y fuera del shred, sobre todo cuando otras bandas como Dream Theater o Dragonforce están obsesionadas con ello?
Mike: Siempre he creído que un poco es más que suficiente, toco según lo que siento. Trato de incorporar un solo de guitarra en la canción que estoy trabajando/grabando. La clave es llegar con un lick memorable y que encaje en el track, tocar un lick shred que dure demasiado no es mi estilo. Me gusta tocar solos, pero lo más importante es la onda.
Sergio: Tu solo favorito de Ace Frehley y por qué?
Mike: (MUERTO DE LA RISA) los solos de Ace Frehley... él es mi mejor amigo, lo conozco por más de 20 años, hemos tocado y jammeado en vivo muchas veces. Me ha enseñado demasiado y es la razón por la que toco hoy en día. Todo solo de Ace Frehley me gusta, él es un genio en tocar solos con clase dentro de un track. La influencia de Ace en mi guitarra puede escucharse a través de todas mis grabaciones. Estuve presente en todas las sesiones de su último disco, ANOMALY, que salió en septiembre de 2009. Me ha enseñado un montón de sus trucos de grabación y ejecución, siempre estaré agradecido

Sergio: Can you tell us how you got to meet the great Mike Starr?
Mike: I met Mike Starr through a guitarist Al Romano. Romano, saw some youtube footage of a performance i did and contacted Starr. A day later, Starr contacted me by phone and we hit it off. He flew to NY and performed a handful of songs with me, forcing himself out of "retirement'. We then started a project that was called "SUPPASTARR" & then Mike Starr's Motorcade.
Sergio: You have played with Ace Frehley and Jerry Cantrell, both have a great vibrato and a signature tone, can you tell us some tips to get those sounds?
Mike: The tips I can offer is just practice, practice, practice! Its about feel and in order to have that feel, one needs to practice.
Sergio: When you play with Facelift, what gear are you using for the metal songs and for the acoustic songs?
Mike: My gear is universal. Onstage & in the studio, I run through two Marshall cabinets(4x12 each), I use Peavy 5150 & 5150-II heads. I use a Cry Baby, Heil Talkbox,MXR phase 90 & a boss TU-2 floor tuner. Once in a while i will use a Rotovibe.
Sergio: Being someone who has seen mr Cantrell live and share stage with him, can you tell us how he achieve those fat overbends? And how you emulate those, playing alice material?
Mike: Jerry Cantrell is a very unique player. There is only one Jerry Cantrell and I cant speak on his behalf, but after studying his technique and performing it, its again, a matter of practice. Very distinct style of guitar. Jerry has a great feel and talent.
Sergio: Your favorite song of Alice and why? And what song is the most challenging to play live, and why?
Mike: My favorite Alice In Chains song would have to be THEM BONES. Its a very challenging song. Singing it and playing it together is a real challenge and the guitar solo has just a great feel to it.
Sergio: You told me that you are a friend of the great Rowan Robertson, any chance to do some collaboration together or why not, with Jerry Cantrell, a G3 kind of?
Mike: Rowan Robertson is my friend. He is living in California and Im in NY. Weve jammed in Los Angeles together. I was at his birthday bash. He is an amazing guitarist and is currently recording with his new band DC4 which also features Jeff Duncan the guitarist from Armored Saints who is also a friend and ive jammed with. Amazing musicians! So we all have these projects consuming our time, but who's to say the possibilty down the road cant happen.
Sergio: Last time we talk about the importance of playing guitar in a song context, and not overplay, how you manage that and stay away of the temptation of unusual shred and note dropping, specially when bands like Dream Theater or Dragonforce seems to be obsessed with that way?
Mike: I was always a believer in a little is just enough. Im a player you go's by feel. I try to incorporate a guitar solo into the song Im working on/recording. The trick is to come up with a lick that is memorable and fits the song. To play a shredding lead for too long of a duration just isnt my style. Im not knocking the shredders, its just not for me. i like to sneak into the solo, but the most important thing for me is the feel of it.
Sergio: Can you tell us your favorite solo of Ace Frehley and why?
Mike: LOL, Ace Frehley solos...Ace is my best friend, Ive known him for 20+ years. Ive jammed/performed live with him so many times, he's tought me so much and is the main reason I play guitar today. Any solo Ace Frehley does is a solo i like. talk about placing a tasteful solo in a song. Ace is the master of that. My Ace influences in my guitar work can be heard throughout my recordings. I was present with Ace in his studio for the entire recording of his ANOMALY album which came out in Sept.09.. He has showed me so many recording tricks, guitar techniques. I will be forever grateful.

Está siendo producido por el nominado al Grammy, Alex Salzman, quien hizo un montón en el disco de Ace Frehley, Anomaly. Tuve suerte de conocer a Kevin Hupp (Edgar Winter, Joan Osbourne, Rick Derringer, Eddie Van Halen etc.) que tocó la batería en el track que cantó Travis. Dicha canción ha generado un montón de interés entre ejecutivos de televisión, estudios cinematográficos y de radio, a tal punto que he pensado en transformar mi disco en una colaboración con Travis y Alex. Llamaremos a este proyecto 5REVOLT y el disco debiese estar listo el 31 de octubre del 2010. Nos juntaremos en California en Julio para completarlo.

McCartney es en mi opinión el más grande compositor, vocalista e intérprete ha existido jamás. Nadie conseguiría lo logrado por él y los Beatles en el mundo.

Mike: My solo album is groovin along. My friend/ Seattle vocalist Travis Bracht –SECOND COMING (Capital Records) & POST MODERN HEROES–, did me a favor and sang on a tune that I wrote. It was produced by award winning, Grammy nominated producer /musician Alex Salzman who did a lot of work on Ace Frehley's Anomaly album. I was lucky enough to get Kevin Hupp (Edgar Winter, Joan Osbourne, Rick Derringer, Eddie Van Halen etc) to do the drum track on the song that Travis sang on. The song has generated a lot of interest for TV, Motion Picture, radio and industry executives. It has come to the point where I have decided to turn my solo project into a collaboration with Travis and Alex. We have named this project 5REVOLT and the album should be completed by October 31st, 2010. We are all meeting in California in July to complete it.
Sergio: What kind of music is Mike Starr proyect?
Mike: Mike Starr is one of the most talented bass players Ive ever performed with. He has that natural ability for feel and placement. Mike is currently still into the Alice In Chains style of music, however, he'll write a song out of nowhere on the spot and it can have a Red Hot Chilli Pepper vibe vrs. a Deep Purple meets Hendrix vibe..amazing musician for sure!
Sergio: Finally, any musician you would like to play or compose something?
Mike: I would love the opportunity to play with Paul McCartney as he was also a major influence for me. He use to be in a band not too many people may have heard of called THE BEATLES. lol That would be a dream come true for me, but have have resided to the fact that its one dream that probably cant be answered. McCartney in my opinion is the greatest songwriter, vocalist/performer that there was and will ever be. No one will ever match what Paul & the Beatles did for this world.
