Hoy, en exclusiva para Heavy Shit, Robb nos cuenta algunos trucos tras sus grandes patrones de batería y su graciosa visión de otras bandas canadienses, ENJOY!
Sergio: Algo que he notado de tu estilo es que pese a ser un batero metalero con doble bombo tu enfoque tiene mucha influencia de los antiguos bateros de Jazz y swing, incluso el tono de tu caja en el disco Metal on Metal tiene ese fino sonido a caja de madera pequeña de jazzeros ¿Es algo consciente aplicado a Anvil o es algo natural?
ROBB: Técnicamente soy un batero jazz de la vieja escuela, pero, como no puedo tocar jazz propiamente tal, toco metal, porque el tocar batería en el metal es, en cuanto a dificultad se refiere, lo que sigue a tocar jazz.
En cuanto al tono de caja de Metal on Metal, irónicamente fue un tom metálico de 14"x10" que usamos como caja.
Sergio: En tu performance en vivo, ¿cómo logras ese nivel de precisión, definición en cada nota y, a la vez, solidez y volumen cuando tocas un pasaje rápido en los toms y bombos, especialmente cuando sólo usas las muñecas y rara vez mueves los brazos?
ROBB: El nivel aludido es logrado por 33 años tocando, fumar marihuana y ¡mi amor a patear el culo de la audiencia!
ROBB: Técnicamente soy un batero jazz de la vieja escuela, pero, como no puedo tocar jazz propiamente tal, toco metal, porque el tocar batería en el metal es, en cuanto a dificultad se refiere, lo que sigue a tocar jazz.
En cuanto al tono de caja de Metal on Metal, irónicamente fue un tom metálico de 14"x10" que usamos como caja.

Sergio: One thing i noticed on your drum style, that despite being a double bass drum metal player, your approach has a lot of influence from Jazz and swing drummers, even your snare tone on the metal on metal record has that “wood” clear sound, it’s something that you are conscious off and deliberately apply to the Anvil sound or is just a natural thing?
ROBB: Technically I am an old school Jazz drummer and since I can't play Jazz, I play METAL, because METAL drumming is the top of the game next to Jazz.

ROBB: Sí. Ginger Baker es un dios para mí. Crecí con la influencia de Ginger, Cream y Heavy Blues. No hay nada más pesado que Heavy Blues.
Sergio: Tu sonido de caja en This is thirteen es colosal, diferente a Metal on Metal, tiene una onda muy a lo Bonham, ¿fueron las baterías microfoneadas directo a la mesa o hubo alguna mezcla adicional aplicada? ¿Tienes alguna preferencia especial en cuanto esto?
ROBB: La caja es mi Ludwig 6 1/2" - Modelo 402 de acero inoxidable. La he usado toda mi vida.
El productor debe haber aplicado alguna mierda muy genial para hacerlo sonar como quedó, pero en realidad, es sólo mi caja.
ROBB: Sí. Ginger Baker es un dios para mí. Crecí con la influencia de Ginger, Cream y Heavy Blues. No hay nada más pesado que Heavy Blues.

ROBB: YES. Ginger Baker is a GOD to me. I grew up with Ginger's drumming and Cream and HEAVY BLUES. Nothing is heavier than Heavy Blues.
Sergio: Your snare sound on This is thirteen its huge, totally different from Metal on Metal, has almost a Bonham feel. Were the drums mic'ed straight to the board? Or there was some additional mix applied? Do you have any special preference about this?
ROBB: The snare is my Ludwig 6 1/2" Snare Drum - Model 402 Stainless Steel. I've been using it my whole life.

Sergio: Tus patrones de ritmo en el pie derecho sobre el bombo tienen mucha onda, incluso aplicas acentos entresillados, ¿tienes una técnica especial para ello?
ROBB: Tengo esta forma de usar el pie con la forma de “aerodeslizante”. Toco con botas, de tal forma que la totalidad de la suela de mis botas están en realidad “vibrando” sobre el borde del pedal, a tal punto de “unirse” sobre el mismo. En realidad, la vibración es más rápida y sutil que lo que el ojo logra captar, por eso da la impresión de que mi pie fuese un aerodeslizante.

Sergio: Algunas veces en canciones rápidas tocas unos pasajes lentos para acentuar la densidad del track, manipulando el ritmo de la canción, un gran ejemplo es la canción On the way to hell de Worth the weight ¿Son esos arreglos tu influencia o es algo que Lips compuso cuando desarrolló la canción?
ROBB: Me gusta intervenir los compases, haciéndolos avanzar y mutándolos hacia “el compás de ROBBO”. Así es, manipulo todo lo que toco, baterías, mujeres, el dinero. Es un ejemplo de la ciencia natural. Además, ni siquiera me acuerdo del disco Worth the Weight, fue hace demasiado tiempo.
ROBB: Tengo esta forma de usar el pie con la forma de “aerodeslizante”. Sergio: Your right foot patterns are amazingly groovy, with triplets accents sometimes, do you have a special technique to achieve that?
ROBB: I have this foot technique called "hover crafting". I play with boots where the bottom of my boots are actually floating on top of the pedals but enabling to actually connect with it (the pedal) but it's faster than the eye can see so it seems like your "hover crafting".
Sergio: Sometimes on faster songs, you played some slow licks in order to enhance the “sludge” feel of the song, manipulating the pace of the songs, a great example of that is the song On the way to hell from Worth the weight. Those arrangements are your input? Or it’s something that Lips composed when he wrote the songs?
ROBB: I love cheating time, and moving time, and creating ROBBO time. So yeah, I manipulate everything I touch. Drums, Women, Money... That's just a simple form of natural science. Besides, I don't remember much about Worth the Weight, It happened too long ago.

Sergio: ¿Qué se siente ser hoy en día una banda que la lleva, incluso más que Metallica en algunos países, luego de ser el secreto escondido de Canadá por años?
ROBB: MARAVILLOSO. Viviendo el sueño, ¡mejor que el sexo!
