Entrevista de Sergio Anónimo a Gigi Hangach, vocalista de Phantom Blue, banda que a inicios de los 90, con sólo dos discazos, pasaron de ser las protegidas de Marty Friedman a ser una de las alineaciones de mujeres más potentes de l momento.
Su guitarrista, Michelle Meldrum, fallecida de una hemorragia cerebral el año pasado, las convirtió en otra de las leyenda de culto de los noventa. Acá, en exclusiva para Heavy Shit, Gigi nos cuenta algunas cosillas relacionadas con sus influencias musicales y la experiencia que significó la grabación de sus discos.

Sergio: ¿Puedes actualizarnos sobre tus actuales proyectos ?

Gigi: Desafortunadamente, no estoy en nada en estos momentos.

Sergio: Mirando hacia atrás, estás satisfecha con la producción del primer disco?

Gigi: Sí, es lo que es, y aún sigo orgullosa de ello.

Sergio: De quién fue la idea de lanzar la power ballad Why call it love (del primer disco) como single, especialmente cuando P.Blue eran una banda heavy.

Gigi: Seriamente, en su día se discutió bastante sobre ello, creo que fue Steve Fantano (quien la coescribió) y Marty Friedman. Marty, sorpresivamente, tenía una faceta de guru pop a su lado. Tenía la visión de nosotras re haciendo Cherry Bomb de las Runaways (lo que habría pateado culos ahora) pero en ese tiempo veíamos a Marty como que tenía dos cabezas! En todo caso, cuando escuchamos el resultado final nos gustó mucho, es una especie de balada, pero aún es bien heavy.

Sergio: Can you give us an update of your actual projects

Gigi: Unfortunately, I have no current projects at the moment.

Sergio: Looking backwards, are you happy with the production of the first record?


Gigi: Yes. It is what it is and I’m still proud of it.


Sergio: Whose idea was to release Why call it love as a single, especially when P.Blue was a heavier band…


Gigi: We seriously had to be talked into that one! I think it was both Steve Fantano (who co-wrote WCIL) & Marty Friedman. Marty had a surprisingly pop music guru side to him I think. He had visions of us re-doing Cherry Bomb by The Runaways (which would have been kick ass now) but back then we looked at him like he had 2 heads! When we heard the end result we liked it a lot. It’s a ballad (sort of) but it’s still so heavy.

Sergio: Hablando con Kim Nielsen (bajista de P.Blue) en youtube, me dijo que en las sesiones del segundo disco Built to Perform estaban escuchando bandas más heavy y además la banda vivía tiempos duros, crees que ese disco refleja la rabia vivida claramente?

Gigi: No sé en qué álbum sesionó Kim, pero lo pasé increíble! Quizás ella se refiere a la mierda que tuvimos que lidiar con Tom Zutaut de Geffen Records (CEO del sello Geffen en ese momento), pero más allá de ello, recuerdo estábamos todas alucinadas por el mero hecho de estar ahí, ya que rebozábamos en esperanza y talento. Lo que sí me acuerdo es la decepción que sentíamos cuando Tom no iba a las reuniones de estados de avance del disco, creo que toda la rabia que se refiere fue posterior y directamente dirigida a Tom. (Riendo) Recuerdo que tocábamos para él, el Nuevo material con letras brutales (todas eran dedicadas a él) y siempre le gustaron más esos tracks, sin saber que él era el tópico de quien se hablaba.

Sergio: Talking with Kim Nielsen through you tube, she told me that in the Built to Perform sessions you were listening heavier and darker bands, and besides that, rough times were happening to the band in those days, do you think BTP reflects that animosity and anger quite vividly?


Gigi: I don’t know what album Kim was working on but I had a great time! Maybe she’s referring to the BS we were dealing with from Tom Zutaut at Geffen, but otherwise I remember we were all excited about being there. We were full of so much hope & potential. I do remember the feeling of disappointment when Tom wouldn’t show up for scheduled meetings & progress updates. I think a lot of anger came out later on but it was only directed at Tom. LOL We’d play him new stuff with these scathing lyrics (that were ALL about him) & he’d always like those the best not knowing he was the subject.

Sergio: Estos últimos años, desafortunadamente hemos tenido múltiples perdidas, puedes darnos una reseña de las siguientes personas:

• Ronnie James Dio: Cuánto poder tenía en su performance, luego me percaté que era un sujeto no más alto que yo y me asombró más tanta potencia en un envase tan chico, impresionante.
• Layne Staley: Muy triste, y lo fue más luego de ver a Mike Starr y a la madre de Layne en Celebrity Rehab. Creo que había mucho más talento que el que logramos conocer.
• Paul Grey: Bastante choqueante ¿Se supo finalmente la causa de muerte?
• Chuck Schuldiner: No estoy familiarizada con su música para dar una opinión inteligente, sorry.

Sergio: ¿Puedes contarnos una historia de cuan ídola era Michelle Meldrum (difunta guitarrista y líder P.Blue) ?

Gigi: Michelle tenía un gran sentido del humor, eso amaba de ella. Recuerdo que estábamos ensayando una vez y empezamos a bromear: ella tocaba un riff y yo la seguía cantando, una cosa lleva a la otra, intercambiamos instrumentos entre todas y así nació “Bimbos In Heat”. El primer single fue “F*ck Like A Monster” y Michelle cantaba las siguientes letras “You got a nice ass & you look real good”. El resto es bien sórdido para contar acá. Hehehe.

Sergio: Ha sido un asunto de discusión qué solos fueron tocados por Marty Friedman en el primer disco, de hecho él mismo me contó que todos los solos que la gente pensaba que eran de él eran de la banda, ¿puedes someramente decirnos la verdad?

Gigi: Yo le creería a Marty… (-:

Sergio: This last years has sadly given us a lot of losses, please gave us a brief memory of the following people:

• Ronnie James Dio: I remember first thinking how much power he had! Then I found out he was really no taller than I was & I was even more amazed that he could pack that much power in a surprisingly small frame! Amazing…
• Layne Staley: So sad. Even sadder after seeing Mike Star & Layne’s mom on Celebrity Rehab. I think he had so much more left in him that he probably didn’t even know about yet.
• Paul Grey:Pretty shocking. Do they know the cause of death yet?
• Chuck Schulidner: I’m not familiar enough with his work to comment intelligently. Sorry

Sergio: Can you please tells us a story about how awesome was Michelle Meldrum?

Gigi: Michelle had a great sense of humor. It’s what I loved about her. We were rehearsing one time & started goofing & Michelle was playing this riff & started singing something . One thing leads to another, everyone is switching instruments and “Bimbos In Heat” was born. The Bimbos first single was “F*ck Like A Monster” and Michelle was on vocals singing “You got a nice ass & you look real good” the rest is too nasty to repeat.

Sergio: There has been an issue of debate about how many solos were played by Marty Friedman on the first record, in fact he told me that all the solos that the people thought that was him, were instead the band, can you briefly tell us the truth?

Gigi: I would believe Marty. (-:

Sergio: Danos tu opinion de los siguientes cantantes:

• Rob Halford:No es una influencia ni nada, pero lo que hizo, lo hizo bien
• Oleta Adams (Tears for Fears, solista): No puedo comentar inteligentemente, sorry.
• Roland Orzabal (Tears for Fears): ¿Por qué me preguntas sobre estos cantantes específicos?
• David Bowie: Un clásico, único en su especie.
• Maria Sjöholm: No puedo comentar inteligentemente, sorry.
• Chris Cornell: ¿Cuánto espacio tengo para escribir acá? Amo a Chris Cornell. Es mi favorito absoluto. Adoro Temple of the Dog. Adoro la manera en que dice las cosas. Le di por mucho tiempo la espalda al disco Scream porque todos decían que apestaba, hasta que lo escuché y lo hice por 3 meses seguidos TODOS los días. En mi opinión no puedes equivocarte con Chris (RIE).

Sergio: Please gave us your opinion of the following singers:

• Rob Halford: Not an influence or anything but he did what he did well.
• Oleta Adams: Can’t comment intelligently sorry.
• Roland Orzaba: Why are you asking me about these particular singers?
• David Bowie: A classic, one of a kind.
• Maria Sjöholm: Can’t comment intelligently sorry.
• Chris Cornell: How much space do I have for this one? I LOVE Chris Cornell. He is my absolute favorite. I loved TOTD. I love the way he says things. I put off getting Scream for the longest time because everyone said it sucked, but I listened to it for 3 mos. straight. In my opinion he can do no wrong. LOL

Michelle tenía un gran sentido del humor, eso amaba de ella. Sergio: P.Blue fue criminalmente subvalorada, no obstante, fue toda una influencia para bandas que vinieron después con mujeres liderando, puedes opinar sobre las siguientes de ese tipo: The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, Arch Enemy.

Gigi: No, lo siento. Realmente no puedo, No escucho a ninguna de estas bandas. Pregúntame sobre Sevendust o Taproot o algo como el estilo, jajaja.

Sergio: Finalmente, una cosa que me doy cuenta sobre tu registro vocal, tienes mucha influencia negra, no en el tipo de música que tocas pero en el approach y tus modismos son muy soul, ¿tiene que ver con background musical?


Gigi: ¿En serio? Nunca nadie me lo había dicho, creo que mi background es el opuesto, escuchaba mucho a Queen, Cheap Trick (ambos con voces fuertes) algo de Black Sabbath. Pat Benatar y Suzi Quatro son algunas de las pocas mujeres que admiro y ocasionalmente a Sparks (the Mael brothers). Demasiados para contar acá.

Sergio: Phantom Blue was definitely a criminally underrated band and really an influence for a lot of new coming bands with a female singer leading, can you give us your opinion of these type of bands: The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, Arch Enemy.

Gigi: No, I’m sorry. I really can’t. I don’t listen to any of them. Ask me about Sevendust or Taproot or something. lol


Sergio: Finally, one thing I notice on your vocal range, is that you have a lot of influence of soul music, not on the type of music that P.Blue played, but in your vocal approach and strength there was some black music input, was that something from your musical background?

Gigi: Really? I never heard that before. I’d say the stuff from my background was the exact opposite. I listened to a lot of Queen, Cheap Trick (both with strong, powerful vocals) some Black Sabbath, Pat Benatar & Suzi Quatro were some of the few females I admired & strangely enough Sparks (the Mael brothers) Too many to mention.
